Candle Magic Guide for the Modern Witch

Candle magic is one of the simplest ways to delve into spell work, (especially if you’re a methodical witch like me who needs real structure to a spell.) Working almost like a template, setting up a candle spell can effectively work pretty much any intention into fruition. Plus, candles incorporate the use of fire; which is an element of fast catalyst. You’ll find that because of this, candle spells tend to work pretty fast! I’ve successfully used candle magic in regards to love, friendship, money, hex-breaking, and general wishes. Candle spells can also be completed on behalf of others, making them popular among witches who sell their spell services.

Tapping into color and scent correspondences that represent your intention will add an extra oomph to your spell… Though a white candle can get any job done if nothing else is available. That’s how it was done in the old days anyway! Most chime or taper spell candles come unscented; which is A-OK, because you can anoint any candle with oils of your choice if you please. (This is optional as well.)

Here is a simple color correspondence guide compiled from numerous sources. When selecting (or crafting) a spell candle, think about which color might correspond closest to the intention you are driving for. (I recommend either memorizing correspondences or writing them down in a journal to always have them on hand for spell work. Color correspondences do not only apply to candles; pen ink, crystals, string, and satchels are just a few more examples of color correspondence usage in magic.)

  • White - All purpose; Purification; Clarity; Healing; Angel communication

  • Black  - Protection; Unblocking/Uncrossing; Banishment; Spirit Contact

  • Red - Passion/Lust; Health; Sex Magic; Fast Action; Fertility

  • Orange - Attraction/Road Opening; New Ventures; Positivity; Job Spells

  • Yellow - Banishing Depression; Communication; Mental Intelligence

  • Green - Money Magic; Luck; Prosperity; Tranquility; Nature Magic

  • Blue - Peace; Dream Magic; Weather Spells; Truth/Wisdom

  • Purple - Divination; Psychic Ability/Development; Occult Wisdom; Intuition

  • Pink - Relationships/Friendships; Glamour Magic; Self-Esteem; Familial Affairs

Because spell-craft is highly personal, each witch may have a slightly or entirely different way of doing things than the next. The process I will describe is my way, tried and true for myself. There is no wrong in altering your craft for your own self; in fact, I encourage it! Just a little note to keep in mind that I’m sharing my process not as a “this is the only right way to do it,” but rather a friendly, “this is how I do it, and I’m happy to help.” With that being said, I will give a step by step of how I dress candles and complete a candle spell. With my method, you’ll need a candle, a carving instrument, and an oil or oil blend.

  1. Concentrate on your intention to aid in selecting a color for the candle.

  2. With the color selected, carve the candle with your intention. In other words, carve symbols and/or sayings into the candle that represent your intention to you. If you’re hoping for a specific outcome, then state it word for word onto the candle.

  3. Anoint the candle with an oil/blend. Most practitioners are of the opinion that you should only apply the oil one direction. If you’re attracting something, then apply the oil in a downward motion like you are drawing towards yourself. If you’re warding something away, anoint in an upwards motion like you’re drawing away from yourself. (You’ll find that this step can get messy very quickly, so do not worry if you don’t feel precise on this movement part right away! Practice makes perfect.)

  4. Light the candle and pay attention to it’s flame; this can be an indicator of how the spell may turn out. For the spell to work, I believe you must let it burn down completely. That being said, choose a candle that will work accordingly for you. (HINT: Closet witches may invest in some birthday cake candles.)

  5. Disposing of melted candle wax is up to you! Keep chips in a spell satchel/bottle, mold it when it is still warm, or simply throw it away.

Candle spells are fun in the way we can fully customize and visualize our spells working! I like to lay out corresponding crystals next to the candles in grid arrangements to amplify them as well - it makes for a pretty scene.
